01

Start with the user journey

Choose important tasks such as login, data retrieval or event delivery. Identify signals of success and where to inspect an interrupted step.

A dependency map connects application signals with APIs, data and downstream services.

02

Give signals context

Agree service names, environments and how processing steps are correlated. Logs should support the intended investigation with agreed access and retention.

Dashboards should show measurement scope, denominators and freshness so readers understand the figures.

03

Connect alerts with action

Each alert needs an owner, verification steps and an initial response. Exercise alert delivery and the response workflow together.

Review signals against actual outcomes after changes to refine alerts that are not useful.
